40mm filter-threads for vintage rangefinder lenses

Some older vintage lenses for rangefinder cameras have a rare 40mm filter thread. Do not mix/confuse this with 40.5mm (a lot of vintage rangefinder lenses use 40.5mm). Canon decided for a number of their lenses to use a 40mm thread size to mount filters. Since these lenses were made a long time ago, and almost nobody uses that size/pitch anymore, filters and hoods are hard to find nowadays. Do not try to put on 40.5mm filters/hoods on a 40mm thread, as you WILL screw up your filter threads. This page goes into detail of which lenses use those thread size, what solutions there are out there, and what modern options are available.

  • Period correct: Canon also made clamp-on hoods for their 40mm filter thread lenses, which could be an alternative, as some of them provide options for a Series VII filter in there.
  • Period correct: Walz & Hoya supposedly made 40mm hoods as well, but we have yet to hold those in our hands
  • Modern: Fuji lenshood, LH-X10. These are around 60 USD/EURO, however can be found as replicas for as cheap as 5 euro/dollar.
