This one has clearly seen plenty of use, but it is still a good-looking little lens. The cosmetic wear gives it some character.

There are three very tiny cleaning marks on the front element, which have no effect on the photographs. The glass is otherwise in excellent shape. The focusing helicoid has just been serviced, and both focus and aperture operation are very smooth.

One of the bayonet mounting tabs is slightly bent. This does not affect the operation of the helicoid or mounting the lens on the camera. It is worth mentioning, though, and is the reason for this example's low price.

A lovely Summaron to take out and use, with the original bubble case as a nice bonus.

]]> Leica Summaron 35mm f/2,8 met serienummer 2310198, compleet met de originele bubble. Een duidelijk gebruikt exemplaar, maar nog steeds een mooi lensje om te zien. De cosmetische gebruikssporen geven hem karakter.

Op het frontelement zitten drie heel kleine poetskrasjes, die geen invloed hebben op de foto’s. Verder is het glas in uitstekende staat. De focus helicoid is zojuist geserviced en zowel de scherpstelling als de diafragmabediening loopt zeer soepel.

Een van de nokjes van de bajonetvatting is licht verbogen. Dit heeft geen invloed op de werking van de helicoid of op het monteren van de lens op de camera. Het is wel een punt om te vermelden en de reden dat dit exemplaar zo scherp geprijsd is.

Een fijne Summaron om mee te fotograferen, met als mooi extraatje de originele bubble.

Others remain almost hidden. The Kinoptik Paris ERAX 32mm f/2 belongs to that elusive second group: a remarkably scarce and scarcely documented French lens, offered here in a bespoke, rangefinder-coupled Leica Thread Mount conversion.

Searching for this particular 32mm f/2 reveals only scattered references. Even specialist cinema equipment dealer CinemaGear has written about the difficulty of researching the Erax series, pointing to a French cinema article from June 1950. Its limited surviving documentation adds to its fascination: this is a lens for the photographer or collector who enjoys discovering something well beyond the familiar names and models.

This example, serial number 13167, has a particularly interesting conversion history. Bertrand Costuas of the small French specialist workshop Angénieux & Co documented the work in a post published on 3 October 2017, describing it as part of his September projects. Identified as customer order and conversion no. 020, the lens received a custom bare-brass helicoid and rings, an alloy M39 mount and rangefinder coupling.

The work went considerably beyond changing the mount. According to the original conversion post, the image circle was opened to approximately 41mm, bringing coverage close to the full 24×36mm photographic frame. A full-frame diagonal measures approximately 43.3mm, so some corner fall-off is to be expected. In our own photographs, this example delivers usable full-frame coverage with slight vignetting. The accompanying sample images show the actual results.

The custom brass construction gives the lens a distinctive appearance that complements a classic Barnack Leica beautifully. Its 32mm focal length offers a useful perspective between the familiar 28mm and 35mm choices, while the f/2 maximum aperture provides scope for available-light photography and selective focus. We have photographed with this lens and found it impressively sharp, with beautiful rendering.

Rangefinder coupling operates down to 1 metre, while the lens focuses mechanically to approximately 0.7 metre. For accurate focusing below 1 metre, use live view or an electronic viewfinder on a suitably equipped camera. The LTM mount also permits use on Leica M cameras with a suitable LTM-to-M adapter.

We originally acquired this lens from the photographer who published a photograph on Flickr in October 2017. Previously sold by Camera Obscura Elburg, it has now returned to us through a trade-in, offering another opportunity to acquire this unusual piece of French optical craftsmanship.

The barrel shows attractive signs of use and age. The glass is in beautiful condition, free from scratches, haze and fungus. A scarce vintage Kinoptik, an individually documented specialist conversion and a lens with real photographic appeal—all in one distinctive package.

Sommige vintage objectieven zijn uitvoerig beschreven in boeken, reviews en verzamelaarskringen. Andere blijven vrijwel verborgen. De Kinoptik Paris ERAX 32mm f/2 behoort tot die laatste, bijzonder intrigerende groep: een zeer zeldzaam en nauwelijks gedocumenteerd Frans objectief, hier aangeboden met een op maat gemaakte, meetzoekergekoppelde conversie naar Leica Thread Mount.

Wie informatie zoekt over deze specifieke 32mm f/2, vindt slechts enkele verspreide verwijzingen. Zelfs CinemaGear, een specialist in historische filmapparatuur, schreef over de moeilijkheden bij het onderzoeken van de Erax-serie en verwees daarbij naar een Frans filmtijdschrift uit juni 1950. Die schaarse documentatie maakt dit een fascinerend objectief voor fotografen en verzamelaars die graag iets ontdekken buiten de bekende merken en modellen.

Dit exemplaar, met serienummer 13167, heeft bovendien een interessante conversiegeschiedenis. Bertrand Costuas van het kleine Franse specialistische atelier Angénieux & Co documenteerde de werkzaamheden in een bericht van 3 oktober 2017, als onderdeel van zijn projecten uit september. Het objectief werd vermeld als klantopdracht en conversie nummer 020, voorzien van een op maat gemaakte focus helicoid en ringen van blank messing, een M39-vatting van een lichte metaallegering en meetzoekerkoppeling.

De werkzaamheden gingen aanzienlijk verder dan alleen het vervangen van de vatting. Volgens het oorspronkelijke conversiebericht werd de beeldcirkel geopend tot ongeveer 41mm, waarmee de dekking dicht bij het volledige 24×36mm-formaat komt. De diagonaal van dit formaat bedraagt ongeveer 43,3mm, waardoor enige lichtafval in de uiterste hoeken te verwachten is. In onze eigen foto’s levert dit exemplaar bruikbare full-frame dekking met lichte vignettering. De bijgevoegde voorbeeldfoto’s laten de daadwerkelijke resultaten zien.

De speciale messing constructie geeft het objectief een karaktervolle uitstraling die prachtig past bij een klassieke Barnack Leica. De brandpuntsafstand van 32mm biedt een praktisch perspectief tussen de bekende 28mm en 35mm, terwijl de maximale opening van f/2 ruimte geeft voor fotografie bij bestaand licht en selectieve scherpte. We hebben zelf met dit objectief gefotografeerd en waren onder de indruk van de scherpte en de fraaie beeldweergave.

De meetzoekerkoppeling werkt tot 1 meter; mechanisch stelt het objectief scherp tot ongeveer 0,7 meter. Voor nauwkeurig scherpstellen onder 1 meter is live view of een elektronische zoeker nodig op een daarvoor geschikte camera. Met een passende LTM-naar-M-adapter is het objectief ook op Leica M-camera’s te gebruiken.

Wij kochten dit objectief oorspronkelijk van de fotograaf die er in oktober 2017 een foto van publiceerde op Flickr. Nadat het eerder door Camera Obscura Elburg werd verkocht, is het nu via inruil bij ons teruggekeerd. Daarmee doet zich opnieuw een gelegenheid voor om dit bijzondere stukje Franse optische ambacht te bemachtigen.

De behuizing heeft aantrekkelijke gebruikssporen en patina. Het glas verkeert in prachtige staat, zonder krassen, waas of schimmel. Een zeldzame vintage Kinoptik, een individueel gedocumenteerde specialistische conversie en een objectief waarmee daadwerkelijk mooie foto’s gemaakt kunnen worden.

Offered here is a fascinating and exceptionally uncommon Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon 3.5cm f/2, serial number 1093118, manufactured around 1937. This remarkable lens originates from an era when combining a relatively wide 35mm focal length with an impressive f/2 maximum aperture represented a considerable achievement in optical engineering.

Nearly 90 years old, this Xenon is a wonderful survivor from the golden age of German optical manufacturing.

A Fascinating Connection to Early Cinematography

One of the most intriguing aspects of this particular Xenon is its connection to early motion-picture photography.

The Dutch Combat Camera Collection, documented on the website Eindespoor.nl, features a Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon 3.5cm f/2, serial number 1683422, dating from 1939, fitted to an American Bell & Howell Eyemo 35mm motion-picture camera.

The Bell & Howell Eyemo, introduced in the 1920s, became one of the most recognisable professional motion-picture cameras of its era. Compact, robust and mechanically reliable, it was extensively used by newsreel cameramen and military combat photographers during the Second World War.

The combination of a German Schneider-Kreuznach lens and an American Bell & Howell camera is particularly fascinating, illustrating the international nature of professional cinematography during the years leading up to the war.

Our example, serial number 1093118, predates the documented 1939 lens by approximately two years. Although its exact original camera application cannot be conclusively established, the Dutch collection provides a valuable historical reference for this unusual 35mm f/2 Xenon.

German Optical Engineering from the 1930s

Schneider-Kreuznach was already an established manufacturer of high-quality photographic and cinematographic optics by the 1930s.

The Xenon name became associated with Schneider's high-speed optical designs, offering photographers and cinematographers considerably greater light-gathering capabilities than many conventional lenses of the period.

This particular example bears the historic D.R.P. (Deutsches Reichspatent) engraving, a characteristic marking of German patented technology from the pre-war era.

Its 35mm focal length and fast f/2 aperture made this type of lens particularly interesting for motion-picture applications, where available-light photography and compact equipment were often essential.

Original Helicoid – Leica M Conversion

What makes this example particularly attractive is the preservation of its original mechanical construction.

Rather than being completely rehoused in a modern focusing mount, the lens retains its original focusing helicoid. A Leica M flange has been fitted to the existing mechanism, allowing the lens to be used on modern Leica M cameras while preserving its authentic pre-war appearance and mechanical character.

The conversion is not rangefinder-coupled; focusing is performed using the original distance scale or through live view on compatible digital Leica cameras.

The lens covers the full 35mm photographic frame with minimal vignetting, making it especially interesting for contemporary full-frame photography.

Een uitzonderlijk zeldzaam vooroorlogs Duits filmobjectief uit circa 1937, met de originele focus helicoid en prachtig geconverteerd naar Leica M.

Dit bijzondere Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon 3.5cm f/2 objectief, met serienummer 1093118, werd omstreeks 1937 vervaardigd. Het stamt uit een tijd waarin de combinatie van een relatief grote beeldhoek van 35mm en een indrukwekkende lichtsterkte van f/2 een aanzienlijke optische prestatie was.

Bijna 90 jaar oud is deze Xenon een prachtig bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van de Duitse optische industrie uit de jaren dertig.

Originele Focus Helicoid – Leica M Conversie

In plaats van het objectief volledig opnieuw te behuizen, is de originele focus helicoid behouden. Op het bestaande mechanisme is een Leica M-flens gemonteerd, waardoor het objectief gebruikt kan worden op moderne Leica M-camera’s zonder zijn authentieke vooroorlogse karakter te verliezen.

Het objectief heeft geen meetzoekerkoppeling. Scherpstellen gebeurt met behulp van de originele afstandsschaal of via live view op daarvoor geschikte digitale Leica-camera’s.

Bijzonder is bovendien dat het objectief het volledige kleinbeeldformaat dekt, met slechts minimale vignettering.

Focus is smooth, and aperture clicks are crisp. The original hood has 2 small clips, one of them is broken, but is included. This has no effect on the mounting or working of the lens cap, they usually break because of age.

]]> For sale is a Leica Summilux 35mm aspherical. This is the first aspherical 35mm Summilux by Leica. A great performer on both film & digital. Recognisable by its concave front element. The lens is in great condition, with no cleaningmarks, haze or fungus. The barrel has very minor user marks. Comes with aftermarket rear cap, and original hood with rubber protection cap. Focus is smooth, and aperture clicks are crisp. The original hood has 2 small clips, one of them is broken, but is included. This has no effect on the mounting or working of the lens cap, they usually break because of age.

It also has a interesting rollei front lens cap with a little cord attached to it, to allow the lens cap to be removed.

Glass is in very good condition with no scratches, haze or fungus. Does have very small cleaning marks, which have no impact on image quality.

Comes with the builtin hood, Leica UV filter, adapter, front and rear lens cap.
